How to reduce your energy bill by up to 50%

Press release 8 Feb 2012

Even with the latest energy price drops the average household energy bill still totals £1,163 a year. Householders wishing to slash their energy bills by up to half should insulate now, the National Insulation Association (NIA) advises

An astounding two thirds of heat can escape through uninsulated walls and roofs; by simply installing cavity wall and loft insulation, savings of between £185 and £310* per year can be made and with current low installation costs the payback period can be as little as one to three years. The savings are even greater for insulating solid walls and lofts, now between £510 and £635** per year.

Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA, commented: “Home insulation is the single most effective method of saving money on domestic energy bills, with savings continuing year on year! There are fast-rising consumer costs in many other areas too so why wait a moment longer to put these money-saving measures into place?

“It’s really as simple as picking up the phone to your local NIA installer who will provide a free home survey.”

The NIA also advises that, for complete peace of mind, householders should contact its members for a free quotation and advice on the best type of insulation suitable for the home. Not only are they qualified installers who are bound by a strict Code of Professional Practice, but they are also able to advise on the range of grants and subsidies available from the government, local authorities, energy suppliers and how to apply.

To find out more, or to contact their local installer, householders should visit the NIA website on www.nationalinsulationassociation.org.uk

*Based on adding cavity wall insulation (CWI) (saving around £135 per year) and loft insulation (LI) of 270mm (saving around £175 per year). Saving based on an uninsulated three bed semi detached gas heated house. If a property has 50mm of loft insulation then a combined saving for CWI and LI would then be around £185 per year.

** Estimated savings if an uninsulated home installed Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) (saving of around £460) and Loft Insulation (LI) (saving around £175) to the recommended depth of 270mm – based on a three bedroom gas heated semi detached house. If a property has 50mm of loft insulation then a combined saving for SWI and LI would then be around £510 per year.
